Qld: Reef rescue plan revealed

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says the survival of the Great Barrier Reef will be
guaranteed by a water quality protection plan unveiled today.

The joint federal and state government initiative was devised to arrest and reverse
the decline in water quality entering the reef lagoon.

Mr BEATTIE says the Great Barrier Reef Water Quality Protection Plan is essential and
his government will spend $57.6 million in reef-related projects this financial year.

He says the key part of the plan is to reduce the amount of harmful chemicals used
by famers which run-off into rivers and ultimately into the reef.
